bonoBono commented on President Obama’s European tour as the president is heading to Ireland. Bono made a joke about the correlation between the president’s name with a common Irish surname. Born in Dublin, Ireland as Paul Hawson as as son of a devout Roman Catholic postal worker, Bono’s mother died when he was only 14 years old. He joined the band U2 in October 1976 when he was in high school, and was titled “Bono Vox” (good voice). He was made the front man for Irish rock group even though his singing at the time was less powerful than his convincing stage presence.

Bono and U2

U2 began touring almost immediately and released his first album, Boy, in 1980. In 1987, they released “The Joshua Tree, their sixth album, and one that catapulted the band – and outspoken front man – the stars. Subsequent albums secured U2 reputation for achievement and innovation, including 1991′s industrial-sounding Achtung Baby, 1993′s funkier edge Zooropa, and under the influence of techno-1997′s pop.

U2 returns to its modern roots rock with 2000′s All That You Can not Leave Behind. Create a simple but powerful music, the group scored with such songs as soaring “Beautiful Day”, which won the Grammy for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. How to disassemble the atomic bomb (2004) also went well, both commercially and critically. Its two lead single, “Vertigo” and “Sometimes you can not make it on her,” made a strong projection on the charts and won several Grammy Awards.

Bono’s success over the years

In March 2009, the band released No Line On The Horizon, which reached the top of the U.S. pop charts. It was pointed out as popular songs like “Get Your Boots On” and “Magnificent“. To support the album, Bono and the rest of the group have toured extensively.

During his long career at U2, Bono has written most of the band’s lyrics, often focusing on such topics as non-traditional politics and religion. In fact, social activism has always been close to the singer’s heart, and he continues to use his music to raise awareness with the performances of the Band Aid, Live 8, Net and help, among others. In 2006, U2 joined forces with punk-influenced band Green Day to record cover Skids “Saints Are Coming“, in favor of the renewal of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The next year, Bono and U2 contributed the rest of the title track with the Instant Karma: Amnesty International Save Darfur Campaign.
